Ignimbriti e chiese rupestri della Cappadocia (Turchia)

Abstract
Cappadocian plateau, average elevation 1,000 m, is characterized by extremely widespread ignimbritic deposits (11,000 km²), easy to be eroded. This typical geomorphologic context, with the famous pinnacles (''Fairy Chimneys''), is also characteristic of a remarkable variety of underground settlements, probably used as far back as the half of VII century A.D. The most important settlements are considered the numerous Byzantine rock-hewn churches, originally many hundreds, precious for their Iconoclastic and Christian mural decor. About others underground structures we can distinguish: cliff dwellings, cone settlements, underground towns and villages. This wide and extraordinary patrimony undergoes remarkable degradation, due to several and different causes, firstly geological-natural factors, after anthropic activities. After a detailed analysis of the degradation causes, some ideas to reverse the trend to erosional destruction of the Cappadocia churches and settlements are given.
