Geositi nel paesaggio italiano: ricerca, valutazione e valorizzazione. Un progetto di ricerca per una nuova cultura geologica

Abstract
The geological component of the landscape represents the great book of Nature on whose pages the rocks and strata - the most remote events of our Planet's history - are recorded. Therefore, by recognising Geology's role as the primordial archive of the most complex and vast library of the Earth, the need to implement educational and conservation initiatives regarding geological assets should be acknowledged, also taking in their historical significance. The main goal of this Research Programme is the comparative study of some areas of the Italian territory in order to identify Geological Assets (Geosites), with particular evidence to geomorphological assets (Geomorphosites). The research has three objectives: a) comparative analysis of results; b) definition of guide lines for methodological research on Geosites; c) planning of Geosites management and exploitation. The comparison of results from each research units will produce a proposal of standardized research method collected in a Manual that will be presented at the 32° International Congress of Geology (Florence, 2004). A last objective will concern some examples of management and exploitation actions: examples of didactic units, touristic routes, etc.; attention will be paid also to part of scientific routes potentially utilizable by senior citizens or disable people.
